How successful you think Google+

Google+, often referred to as “Google Plus”, is Google’s own Social Network. In addition to functioning as a social network, the site also works as a social layer for Google’s services. Google+ launched in May 2011, and it was described by the company as a “social layer across all of Google Services.” This is basically exactly what it does. Google+ allows users to share their interests and identity’s across Google’s various sites. Google+ allows for a large level of fluidity across the various sites administered by Google, such as Google Drive and Google Docs.

How successful you think Google+ has been depends on who you are, and who you compare the site to. Although it experienced strong growth in its first few years, user statistics have seriously varied. The project has been overseen by three Google executives since its initiation, which has led to substantial continuous changes to the program over a four year period.

Google+ is the site’s fourth foray into social networking. Its predecessors are Google Buzz (2010-2011), Google Friend Connect (2008-2012) and Orkut (2004-2014). None of these especially took off, but Google decided that there was still valuable potential in the social networking sphere, and in 2011 Google Plus was launched, and since then the other Google social networking sites have all been retired.

Although it has gone through a great number of changes, Google+ is still a worthwhile investments for businesses wanting to develop their social media presence. The site does have an increasing level of impact, especially among males aged between 24 and 36. And there are real advantages to the Google+ model of being able to integrate across various google-administered websites. Hopefully we just haven’t seen the best that the site has to offer yet.
